Affirmative action does nothing to remediate past discrimination based on race.
Suppose a highly qualified black applicant to the NYPD or NYFD was denied
selection in the 1950s due solely to his race. Then 30 years later, that man's
utterly *unqualified* grandson is hired over well-qualified whites, *solely* due
to the grandson's race. In what way does that remediate the absolute wrong that
was done to the grandfather? *It doesn't*. There may be /some/ way to make up
that wrong to the grandfather, but hiring his unqualified grandson isn't it —
and the larger society suffers by having an incompetent cop or fireman on the force.

is the first time in coming up on eight years, and undoubtedly the last time,

people sort themselves into career and school choices. They do make a
difference. I have worked in information technology for close to 50 years, in
programming, database administration and system administration, in large
companies and small, and I can count the number of black programmers, sysadmins
and DBAs I've worked with on one hand. And my career began in the heyday of
affirmative action and anti-discrimination law, so invidious discrimination
against blacks cannot be the answer. The answer is that, for whatever cultural
reasons, blacks aren't much drawn to I.T.

There are cultural reasons why nearly all women's manicurists are Vietnamese,
and why, at least in southern California, nearly all independent doughnut shops
