California has declared a state of emergency for H5N1 bird
flu amid fears that the virus could jump to people and start
to spread.

The move comes in response to a major outbreak of the virus
among the state's cattle which has spilled over and infected
dozens of dairy workers.

The announcement follows news that an individual in Louisiana
was hospitalized with H5N1, becoming the country's first
severe case.

The declaration of emergency gives California state and local
resources to contain the outbreak, including hiring staff or
issuing contracts for things like tests or personal protective
equipment (PPE).

Governor Gavin Newsom said the move would free up funds and
'streamline and expedite' the state's efforts to tackle
the outbreak.

. . .

Hmmmmmm ....

Is he being 'ahead of the (possible) curve' or is
there some political machination going on here ?

Ummm ... sort of. However if you WERE serious about
'containment' you'd need the PPE and testing and
remedial measures.

SO FAR this disease has mostly afflicted cattle. The
one - ONE - 'severe'' case is in LA and the first
news is that it came from dead chickens. MIGHT not
even be H5N1 that made him sick, that it was just
'coincidental', but some other viral or bacterial
nasty from the chickens.

There's been a 'mystery fever' in Congo of late that
is fairly widespread. They were initially afraid it
was Ebola or a relative. News now is that it is not
any single disease ... but several normally-lesser
ones piled up on top of each other. The combined
effect kinda looks like Ebola. Food shortages in
the afflicted area likely weakened the pop. That
mostly teens have been affected suggests that drug
use may have been another contributing factor.

H5N1 *does* have the potential run riot in humans.
Just a few little mutations - and viruses are unstable
and mutate all the time. It's indeed worth watching
and it wouldn't hurt to come up with a vax which could
be put into production quickly.

As for Newsom ... I'll have to find the FULL text, with
small print. Is this just 'funding' or a set-up for yet
another Covid-like ultra-lockdown and stripping of
rights and liberties ??? Newsom wants to "Trump-Proof"
California. What does that LOOK like ? I don't really
trust Newsom when he says 'public health' is his priority.
